Privacy notice
We collect as little personal data as we can: your email address and choices when you sign up for a newsletter or register as a professional, the server logs every website keeps, and the cookies described in our cookie policy. We do not sell your data or pass it to product providers, and we use it only to run The Investment Daily.
This notice explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it and your rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. It was last updated on 9 October 2026.
Who we are
The Investment Daily is published by The Webezine Company (TWC). We are the controller of the personal data described here. To contact us about your data, email editor@theinvestmentdaily.com with “Privacy” in the subject line.
What we collect
| When | What we collect |
|---|---|
| You sign up for a newsletter | Your email address; the newsletters you chose; the date and time you gave consent and the wording you agreed to; a hashed version of your IP address |
| You register for TID Professional | Your email address, which may be a work address; the newsletters you chose; your FCA Firm Reference Number, if you choose to give it; the date and time you gave consent; a hashed version of your IP address; whether and how we verified that you are an investment professional |
| You email us | Your email address, your name if you give it, and what you write |
| You visit the site | Server logs kept by our web host: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the page you came from and the time |
| You sign in, or accept analytics cookies if we offer them | The cookies listed in our cookie policy |
A hash is a one-way code made from your IP address. We store the hash, not the address, so that we can spot repeated or automated sign-ups. A hashed IP address can still be personal data, and we treat it as such.
If you give us a Firm Reference Number, we check it against the FCA’s public register. We do not send your details to the FCA. We do not ask for payment details or for special category data such as health or religion, and we do not buy email lists.
Why we use it, and our lawful basis
| Purpose | Lawful basis under UK GDPR |
|---|---|
| Sending the newsletters you chose | Consent. You can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email. |
| Running your TID Professional registration and checking that you are an investment professional | Legitimate interests: content written for professionals has to be kept for professionals, and we cannot do that without checking. |
| Keeping a record of when and how you consented | Legitimate interests: we need to be able to show that you agreed. |
| Preventing abuse of our forms and keeping the site secure, using hashed IP addresses and server logs | Legitimate interests: protecting the site and its readers. |
| Answering your emails, corrections and complaints | Legitimate interests: running a publication that answers its readers. |
| Keeping a record of addresses that have unsubscribed | Legitimate interests: making sure we do not email you again. |
| Measuring how the site is used, only if we turn on analytics | Consent, given through the cookie banner. |
We do not make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not build advertising profiles.
Who else handles your data
We use a small number of service providers, known as processors, who handle data only on our instructions:
- our web host, which stores the site, its database and the server logs;
- the service that sends our newsletters, if it is separate from our host;
- an analytics provider, only if we turn on analytics and only for readers who consent.
We will name each provider on this page before newsletter sign-ups open. We may also share data where the law requires it, or with a buyer if the publication is ever sold, who would have to honour this notice.
If a provider stores data outside the UK, we will use the safeguards UK law requires, such as transfers to a country covered by UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement published by the Information Commission’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator.
How long we keep it
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Newsletter email address and choices | While you are subscribed. Deleted within 30 days of unsubscribing. |
| Record of your consent | While you are subscribed and for two years after, so that we can show when and how you agreed. |
| Unsubscribe record | A hashed copy of your email address, kept for as long as we send newsletters, so that we do not email you again. |
| TID Professional registration | While your registration is active. Deleted two years after your last sign-in, or sooner if you ask. |
| Hashed IP addresses | 90 days. |
| Server logs | 30 days, unless we need them for longer to investigate abuse. |
| Emails, corrections and complaints | Up to six years, because they may be needed to answer a legal claim. |
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;

- ask us to delete your data;
- ask us to restrict how we use it;
- object to our use of it where we rely on legitimate interests;

If a request is complex, or you have made several, the law allows up to two more months; if we need them, we will tell you within the first month and explain why.
Complaints
